When Floriano Francescani first opened the doors of this café in 1720 onto what Napoleon called one of the world’s most beautiful drawing rooms, it was known as Venezia Trionfante. Over time, the café’s regulars dubbed it the Florian after its owner, and the name eventually caught on. Artists, intellectuals, politicians and writers living in or visiting Venice regularly came here. Today, a coffee at Florian can easily run you between i5 and i14 (especially if one of their specialty coffees appeals to you, like the Caffè dell’Imperatore prepared with zabaglione and crema di latte liqueurs). If you absolutely must experience Florian, I’ve found their toasts and panini to be a fair deal, but they also serve a variety of salads and desserts. When the orchestra is serenading, be prepared for an additional i5 per person to be tacked onto your bill.
